What is this year's Earth Day theme? Fittingly, this year's theme is Restore Our Earth, which focuses not only on the need to reduce our impact on the planet as we recover from the effects of Covid-19, but also how we can play a role in repairing the damage we've done. - Earth Day.Org
Sustainability is becoming more important for all companies, across all industries. In honor of Earth month let's look at businesses that embrace sustainability.
"The earth is what we all have in common."
A sustainable business is any organization that participates in environmentally friendly or green activities to ensure that all processes, products, and manufacturing that adequately address current environmental concerns while maintaining a profit.
Let's look at some companies who are a great example of showing true sustainability in their businesses and brands:
Patagonia is one of the most sustainable clothing brands in the sport & outdoor sector. One percent of their revenue goes to environmental organisations, and they organise workshops where consumers learn how to repair their own clothing and belongings. They also encourage sustainable travel by organising a yearly event in June, when their bicycle-loving employees come together and celebrate.
Kicking Horse Coffee is a Canadian coffee company from the heart of the Rocky Mountains. In an industry with so many problems, Kicking Horse is doing the right thing: They commit to only using fair trade, organic and sustainable coffee.
Kicking Horse Coffee is a leader in the ethical and sustainable coffee business. They care about the communities they affect, whether it’s with the local coffee growers or their neighbours in Canada. They also commit to good practices for the planet and for future generations. Moreover, they partner with The Nature Conservancy of Canada to help conserve lands in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia.
Did you know almost all synthetic activewear is made from plastic?
Thankfully, Girlfriend Collective is changing that. Their leggings are made out of recycled water bottles! But it's not just the leggings that are sustainable. Other products are made from recycled fishing nets, nylon, polyester, and spandex.

Veja is a French footwear and accessories brand. Veja was the first sustainable sneaker brand in the world. All their shoes are made with high-quality recycled materials, organic cotton, and sustainably-sourced leather.
Outland Denim is credited as the world’s most sustainable & humanitarian denim on the market!
Outland never uses harsh chemical dyes and they only use the most sustainable technologies including laser, ozone and eflow to significantly reduce water usage. To top it off, all products are made with organic cotton proven to use 91% percent less blue water. They practice true holistic sustainability - environment, economic and social. Saving lives and saving the planet!
This sustainable swimwear brand is made from ECONYL: a 100% regenerated Nylon fibre made from recycled fishing nets and any waste products found floating around the ocean.
PAPER London's founder Philippa Thackeray says nothing is more pertinent than Robert Swan's quote: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”
Just like with each and everyone of us, there is no "one right solution" and there is no "100% sustainable" brand out there. Solutions start with choices - choose to do better, buy better and help impact the restoration of our planet instead of being a part of the problem.
